Marauders Enter Thunderdome
Huge OUA West basketball matchup this weekend
January 29, 2014 — Thunder Bay, Ont.
The Thunderwolf basketball squads face their toughest opposition remaining in the OUA West schedule this weekend, with the McMaster Marauders entering the Thunderdome for a pair of double headers. Game times are 6:00pm (women) and 8:00pm (men), Friday and Saturday.

Men (6-10)

The OUA West division-leading Marauders (13-3) enter the Thunderdome with lots to prove. They were eliminated from the playoffs last February (81-76) by the senior-laden Thunderwolves of 2012-13, and now have a chance to redeem themselves against Lakehead's new crew of freshmen and remaining veterans.

Taylor Black presents one of the tougher defensive checks in the OUA, the 6'7" forward leading the Marauders with 14.9 points and 6.9 rebounds per game and a good touch around the basket and from distance. That being said McMaster has several players capable of scoring, with 5 other players averaging close to 10 points per game.

Coach Matt Erdman:

"This weekend is going to be a very tough test for our guys. Mac has a talented, deep, veteran group with a lot of different pieces. Our focus is on what we do, sticking to the game plan and bringing the right attitude and effort for 40 minutes."

'Wolves Notch 99, Beat Brock Handily
January 25, 2014 — St Catharines, Ont.
The men's basketball team scored a season-high 99 points in Saturday's win over the Brock Badgers, final score 99-57.

Just as it was in the women's game earlier that evening, the second quarter was a raving success for the Thunderwolves.

Once leading 27-17 after the first quarter, Lakehead exploded in a 31-to-6 second quarter trouncing which left little room for doubt as to the game's outcome.

Henry Tan led the 'Wolves once again, scoring 23 points (13-14 FT), marking the first time this season he has scored 20+ points on back-to-back nights; certainly a good sign heading into the season's stretch run.

Igor Lebov scored 17 points with 9 rebounds while Dwayne Harvey had 15 points and 6 assists. Joey 'Nitty Gritty' Nitychoruk had another efficient outing with 12 points in 12 minutes with 4 rebounds, 2 blocked shots and no turnovers.

Tshing Kasamba led the Badgers in scoring, with 12 points in the losing effort.

Lakehead hit 24 of their 26 free throws, and made 21 assists on 33 field goals.

Coach Matt Erdman:

"Tonight was probably our most complete game of the season. We didn't settle and we dictated the pace of the game. Having said that, we're going to need to refocus, not be satisfied and build on the weekend."

The men's team return home to play the OUA West division-leading McMaster Marauders next weekend.

Men's Hoops Win 78-68 Over Brock
Tan scores 23, Lebov and 'Nitro' give LU a boost
January 24, 2014 — St Catharines, Ont.
The men's basketball team sought to improve their playoff prospects, winning 78-68 over the Brock Badgers on Friday evening.

The Thunderwolves jumped all over the Badgers in the first half, leading 18-12 after 10 minutes and 35-21 at halftime.

What separated the two teams was their performance on the backboards, as Lakehead grabbed 46 rebounds to Brock's 20 on the game.

Igor Lebov nearly out-rebounded the Badgers himself, grabbing 17 rebounds of his own to go with 11 points in 26 minutes of work.

What flew in the face of their hustle on the glass was their careless attitude towards ball control, as Lakehead committed 29 turnovers, giving the Badgers a chance to challenge late in the game.

Henry Tan led the Pack with 23 points, backed up by Dwayne Harvey on the scoresheet with 15 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds.

Joey 'Nitro' Nitychoruk (Winnipeg, Man.) played a key role coming off the bench to score 14 points and grab 7 rebounds with 2 steals in 11 minutes of work.

Top Badger was Tshing Kasamba with 21 points. Brandon John scored 15 and Dani Elgadi grabbed 12 rebounds.

Coach Matt Erdman:

"Our overall effort and 2nd chances down the stretch got us the win tonight. Joey gave us a huge lift off the bench. Turnovers have to be cleaned up but credit to Brock for coming back and making us earn the win."

The two teams will rematch tomorrow evening at 8pm.

The women's and men's basketball teams head to St Catharines this weekend for double headers against the Brock Badgers.

Game times are 6pm (women) and 8pm (men),Friday and Saturday.

The men's team will attempt to find their stride against a struggling Brock Badgers team (2-12) who has yet to win a game in 2014.

Brock is led by rookie forward Dani Elgadi, who averages 18.9 points and 10.3 rebounds per game.

Coach Matt Erdman:

"We got knocked back a bit last week but our guys came to practice with a positive attitude and the right energy on Monday. Waterloo Visits Thunderdome to Begin 2014
January 8, 2014 — Thunder Bay, Ont.
The advent of 2014 welcomes the Waterloo Warriors to the Thunderdome as the women's and men's basketball teams resume regular season play this weekend.

Game times are women at 6pm, men at 8pm, Friday and Saturday.

The men's team is coming off a successful non-conference tournament over the winter break, defeating Laval, UQAM, and Sheridan college.

The transition back to regular season play will hopefully be a smooth one for the 'Wolves against a struggling Warriors team (1-9) that won their first game of the regular season on Tuesday against Toronto, 86-80. They did so on the shoulders of 3rd year guard Jaspreet Gill, who scored 31 points (5 three-pointers), well above his season average of 16.5 ppg.

Coach Matt Erdman:

"We're looking forward to playing at home and getting back to a consistent OUA West routine. For our guys, it's been about coming in prepared and focussed, looking to build on each game. It's no secret the middle of our conference is a log jam and we need 40 minutes both nights in order to have a chance to beat a Waterloo team that has played well as of late."
