T-Wolves Go 3-0 at Ryerson Tourney
December 30, 2013 — Toronto, Ont.
The men's basketball team completed the Ryerson University National Invitational Tournament (RUNIT) with a 83-67 win over the Sheridan Bruins on Monday afternoon, as they went a perfect 3-0 in the non-conference event.

Henry Tan provided the spark for the Pack on this occasion, scoring 19 first half points and finished with a game high 28 to go with 5 rebounds and 3 assists.

After leading 34-23 at the half, Lakehead would be challenged by an undersized, yet speedy Sheridan team whose full court pressure in the second half caused problems for Lakehead's backcourt. Several turnovers led to easy buckets for the Bruins who kept the game close, several times closing to within 5 points of the T-Wolves.

The Bruins out-scored Lakehead 24-19 in the third quarter to trail by 6 heading into the fourth.

The game would remain close until the final 5 minutes, with Lakehead leading 67-62 and Sheridan getting desperate, the Bruins committed some costly turnovers and subsequent fouls. The Thunderwolves hit the majority of their free throws and closed out the game with a convincing victory, despite a very pesky Bruins' effort that forced Lakehead into 28 turnovers.

Anthony McIntosh completed a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and got help from Igor Lebov who added 13 points and 9 rebounds. The two forwards were very active on the offensive glass, combining for 10 offensive rebounds. Jamar Coke scored 11 points with 8 rebounds, adding to a large rebounding advantage (22) for Lakehead, 54-32 on the game.

Coach Matt Erdman:

"We had moments of complacency during parts of the game and panicked a bit under pressure but we battled through and got stops and key rebounds when needed them. It's always a positive when you go 3-0 over the Christmas break and hopefully we can keep this momentum going in the 2nd half of conference play."

The T-Wolves play next in the Thunderdome on January 10 against Waterloo.

Lakehead is now 9-0 over the last 3 "holiday" tournaments.  (UQAM 2011, Winnipeg 2012, Ryerson 2013).

Thunderwolves Storm Back to Win Over Laval
December 29, 2013 — Toronto, Ont.
Justin Bell came off the bench to help key a 3rd quarter comeback that got the Thunderwolves back in the game and eventually win, 69-64 over the Laval Rouge et Or on Sunday afternoon.

It was the 'Wolves second game (and win) in Ryerson U's National Invitational Tournament (RUNIT).

The T-Wolves struggled early, down 12-4 late in the first quarter before salvaging the frame with a late run to knot the score at 12 after 10 minutes. Laval would have early success with a half court zone trap that befuddled the 'Wolves offense, as they trailed 27-20 at the half and got into a 15-point deficit, 44-29 halfway through the third quarter.

Lakehead's salvation would come on the defensive end, causing turnovers and converting on layups and free throws. Some of them came from reserve big man Justin Bell (Mississauga, Ont), who succeeded in slowing down Laval star forward Boris Hadzimuratovic and running the floor afterwards. Bell finished with 8 points and 9 rebounds in 19 minutes of play. Lakehead ended the 3rd Q down by only 1, 44-43.

After putting up 23 points in the 3rd quarter, the T-Wolves followed it up with a 26-point effort in the 4th quarter to complete the comeback.

Igor Lebov led the 'Wolves in minutes, points and rebounds, scoring 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds in 38 minutes. Rookie guard Henry Tan scored 13 points with 2 steals, while Dwayne Harvey had 12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Hadzimuratovic scored a game-high 19 points with 8 rebounds for Laval, followed by Antoine Beaumier with 15 points and 7 rebounds.

Both team shot poorly from long range, with the 'Wolves 1-of-10 and Laval just 4-of 20 from behind the arc. There were also copious turnover committed, Lakehead 24 and Laval 21. Lakehead's effort on the glass turned the game around, as they grabbed 48 rebounds (18 offensive) to Laval's 30.

Coach Matt Erdman:

"Our guys did a fantastic job of finishing off the game and making the necessary adjustments down the stretch. Credit Laval for slowing us down for most of the game and causing us to to turn it over 24 times. We matched their physical play and aggressiveness which was a key for us coming in and it directly resulted in our 18 O-boards. We need to keep building little by little each day."

The men's team completes their RUNIT schedule tomorrow at 12 noon against the Sheridan College Bruins.

Happy New Year From Coach Morrison & the 'Wolves

Thunderwolves’ Nation:

Happy Holidays and Seasons’ Greetings!

I hope this note finds happiness for you and yours during this celebratory time of year…. with respect to the more obvious reasons to celebrate, one of the more exciting byproducts of the Christmas season is that it represents the unofficial change of “football season” to “basketball season”.  High School rivalries heat up, college and university conference foes collide and professional play-off spots are solidified all over the next 8-12 weeks.

The New Year also marks the unofficial half-way point in the CIS season and I thought it time to update you all on my experiences in Maine for the season with the Red Claws of the NBA D League. (As well address the Lakehead Thunderwolves progress below!!!).

While the CIS season is at a mid-point, the “D-League” season is still in the early stages.  Our squad in Maine, for example, is currently 5-4 with 41 games left to play.
After a 2-0 start the team’s best player, Jermaine Taylor, was lost for the year with a torn ACL.  I was elected to take Jermaine to the Celtics’ surgeon both after his injury and again last week for pre-surgery and we talked of the Lakehead players who had similar injuries and I believe he was comforted a little bit hearing of the success and determination of Mac, Henry and Ryan throughout their recoveries.
Also on the team is a former NBA player named Chris Wright who is one of the most exciting athletes I have seen first hand.  We hope Chris gets called up soon as 7-8 guys from the league have signed into the NBA after the first few weeks and Chris should be up soon. He does something like this a couple of times each game.

My role with the staff is quite demanding from a time perspective but, admittedly, the least stressed I have been on game days in ten years!  Just like the players in the D League are “grinding” to try and break the NBA “Bubble”; the staffs and coaches are all trying to do the same thing in their respective fields.   Whether it be coaching, training, scouting or operations… in order to be respected, keep up, and contribute each person has to really put in long hours at their respective tasks.

Much like I had hoped when I left for Maine, I have been given a variety of areas in which to work that is providing me the full feed of coaching at this level.  My main role is to provide an advanced scout on each opponent from both a team and personnel perspective.  I work ahead of the schedule and try to have the next opponent ready for the other coaches to review on the evening of our previous game.  (If we play Delware Dec 31, I have the Delaware scout ready on Dec 28 when we play Iowa for example).  What I like about this job is that I am learning every team’s offensive and defensive system.  I also have a good handle on all players on each team which comes in handy in practice and walk-thru with the team. So far the best player I have scouted is Pierre Jackson who played at Baylor last year.

The other part of the job I am enjoying is the “individual development” with the players.   Each assistant (there are 4 of us)  has 3 players assigned to them for development.  The average week this would include 2-3 on court workouts (usually 30-40 minutes after practice) as well as a 10 minute 1 on 1 film session where I cut clips of those players in practice or games and go over some points to improve with them.
Any coach would like this aspect of the job because it has a direct affect on the players but also I enjoy learning how to best “get through” to different personalities….  While the players here are all talented for the most part, they still have similar strong and weak characteristics like any high school or college player.
(If any of you are interested, the players I have been working with since November are Chris Babb, Frank Gaines and Corey Allmond.

I am also very fortunate to have a great group of coaches to work with here for the season.   Head Coach Mike Taylor has a wealth of pro experience and coaches with a positive and energetic demeanor.   He is a big Lakehead (and CFL) fan as he used to work camp with Coach Erdman’s uncle Mark and has known of Coach Erd for a long time.
My main guys on staff include Jim Moran & Ron Nored.  Jim is from Long Island and recently retired after a 10 year career in the ACB (Spain’s top league).  He brings a player’s viewpoint and I have been learning from him the expectations and attitudes that a successful pro player must portray.   Jim played in Spain for multiple seasons with Canadian Carl English, who of course is the cousin of Coach Mark English.
Ron Nored was a starter at Butler University and was the “Greg Carter” of those Butler final four teams a couple of years back.   When Coach Stevens left Butler for the Celtics this summer, he hired Ron with Boston.  Ron spent the summer and fall with the Celtics, learning their system, before switching to his other role as our assistant coach in Maine for the D League season.  Ron is a mature and knowledgeable basketball person who has a bright future in coaching.  We spend many hours discussing X’s and O’s – often comparing what they did at Butler to what we do a Lakehead.   He has also been a great teacher to me of the differences between university style and NBA style as it pertains to things like team defense. (which we both share a love for)
In addition to these guys there are many other excellent people involved in the organization  - I am doing my best to represent both Lakehead and Canada to the best of my abilities by working hard and contributing where I can.   There is not a day that goes by that I do not miss being with the team back home, but that is also one of the strongest motivators for me to continue working hard to learn and become a better coach for our program next season so that this time away can be a positive addition to our quest for a CIS title.

While it is hard (for me) to avoid looking ahead to next season – 2013 has brought us (Lakehead basketball) much to be thankful for and reflect on.  A quick review of 2013 would include reaching new heights as the team defeated Windsor in the old Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto to qualify for a 4th straight CIS Final 8.   Of course the team would ride the momentum to Ottawa and send off a group of 6 graduating players with a CIS national Silver medal in March.
The off-season was also exciting as we welcomed in some new members of the “Lakehead Family” that would quickly show in late 2013 that they have all the potential to fill the big shoes left for them by their most recent predecessors.

We also have many “New Year’s Resolutions” to look forward to for 2014.  Both the players and coaches in Thunder Bay have a great opportunity to make a run at the OUA West competition and drive us into the post season.  Coaches Erdman, English, Searle, Jones and Charlebois continue to do a great job and will build on what they have learned in October and November in addition to their own extensive post-season experience.  Veteran players have shown a desire to step up and now will be their chance to put their own stamp on the leadership of our team.  Transfer players have a few months under their belts and should be comfortable in the blue/white while our young guys are eager to show that a few good games in the first semester are a sign of things to come on a regular basis as they look to become the foundation for this next era of Lakehead Basketball.

Like you all I look forward to watching the guys grow and working with them toward these goals over the next number of months – I also look forward to seeing or speaking with you all in the near future.  Until then, Happy New Year and all the best from Portland, Maine to wherever you are spending your holidays.

Yours in Basketball
Coach Scott Morrison

Lancers Prevail, 82-71 Over Thunderwolves
Movember 29, 2013 — Windsor, Ont.
The men's basketball team weathered the storm against the Windsor Lancers for 35 minutes, but eventually folded, 82-71 on Friday evening.

In what has become one of the better rivalries in the OUA West, Lakehead and Windsor duked it out for three quarters, with Lakehead clinging to a 59-57 leads heading into the final frame. The Thunderwolves managed to keep it close and then take the lead with hustle and sharp shooting from the field (49%), although their percentage from behind the arc (13%) and the free throw line (39%) left much to be desired.

It would be Windsor's superior outside shooting that closed the deal in the final quarter for the Lancers, who went 10-of-23 from long distance, including back-to-back triples late in the fourth quarter.

Lakehead's leading scorers were Henry Tan and Anthony McIntosh, who notched 19 and 18 points, respectively. McIntosh also grabbed 9 rebounds. Rookie Australian centre Brent Wallace continued his marked improvement, scoring 7 points with 8 rebounds and 2 blocked shots.

Dwayne Harvey and Jamar Coke scored 11 points apiece.

For the Lancers Josh Collins had a game-high 20 points while the OUA West's player of the year Lien Philip scored 15 points with 14 rebounds.

In total there was 9 lead changes and 6 ties throughout the game.

Coach Matt Erdman:

"We battled for 40 minutes. Weathered a couple of their runs but the last one in the fourth did us in. Defensively we are pretty good but the 18 offensive rebounds was the difference in the game. Noticeable improvements from this team each game and we must be ready to go tomorrow."

The two teams rematch tomorrow evening at 8pm.

Thunderwolves Roll to 75-55 Win Over Blues
Movember 22, 2013 — Thunder Bay, Ont.
The men's basketball team came out on top, 75-55, against the U of Toronto Varsity Blues on Friday evening, marking their first home victory of the '13-14 regular season.

The 'Wolves opened up the game 15-9 after the first quarter, with both teams slow to get into their offensive flow. All nine Toronto points belonged to Dylan Churchill, courtesy of three 3-pointers. Churchill would finish with 15 points.

The 'Wolves showed a new line-up in playing both 7-footers, Brent Wallace (Brisbane, Aus.) and Andrew McCarthy (Scituate, Mass.) simultaneously during parts of the second quarter. Wallace would get into foul trouble and eventually have to sit, but not before a dunk and a blocked shot to his credit. McCarthy had a breakout game, going 7-of-7 from the field for a team-high 16 points in 21 minutes of play, his best output yet as a Thunderwolf.

Toronto kept within striking distance until the fourth quarter when Lakehead would run away with the game in the final 6 minutes.

The Blues were led by Alex Hill with 21 points (12-of-16 FT), while Dakota Laurin grabbed 8 rebounds.

Top scorers for Lakehead were Andrew McCarthy and Anthony McIntosh with 16 points apiece. Dwayne Harvey added 15 points with 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Igor Lebov had 8 points and 8 rebounds.

Coach Matt Erdman:

"The boys did a great job of sticking to the plan and responding when Toronto made a run. It was a full team effort and it started with a solid week of practice. Everyone contributed in their own way. Tomorrow is another opportunity to build and get better as a unit."

'Wolves Come Up Short Against Rams, 77-65
Movember 23, 2013 — Thunder Bay, Ont.
The men's basketball team didn't have enough answers on Saturday evening, losing 77-65 to the CIS #6 ranked Ryerson Rams.

Despite the loss, there were visible improvements among the young 'Wolves group who have played 4 of the CIS' top 10 teams thus far in the regular season.

Against a speedy Rams' squad, Lakehead's transition defense was continuously tested, and for about 75% of the game would get a passing grade.

That last quarter (25%) would bite them however, as Lakehead's defense gave up 24 points in the final 10 minutes. That being said the 'Wolves did come within two points, with the score 53-51 early in the fourth quarter, and would have tied the game had a lay-up by Justin Bell fallen through, instead of rattling around the the iron before popping out inexplicably.

Bell also offered great relief minutes for Lakehead bigs and made his presence in the lane felt by the Rams, finishing with 2 points and 3 rebounds in 7 minutes. Alex Robichaud was another standout for Lakehead, who scored 9 points and was able to draw two charges. Rookie point guard Nolan McKenzie (Oakville, ON) played 17 minutes, racking up 4 assists and nailing a triple to keep Lakehead in the game.

The 'Wolves were led by Anthony McIntosh with 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting and a perfect 5-5 from the stripe. Dwayne Harvey had 10 points, and Brent Wallace had his best game yet with 8 points and 5 rebounds.

For Ryerson, Jahmal Jones had a game-high 21 points, and Kadeem Green scored 16 points with 8 rebounds.

Coach Matt Erdman:

"I thought we battled against a very good team tonight. Ryerson made plays down the stretch and essentially that was the difference. We're improving, buying in and sticking to the game plan more and more each week."

The men's team will conclude their pre-Christmas portion of the season in Windsor next weekend against the Lancers.

Blues and Rams Visit for Basketball Tip Off
Movember 20, 2013 — Thunder Bay, Ont.
Basketball action takes over the Thunderdome once again this weekend for the final home games before the December break. Visiting this weekend are the Toronto Varsity Blues (Friday) and the Ryerson Rams (Saturday). Women play at 6pm, men at 8pm.

Thunderwolf Women (3-3)

The women's team enter the weekend following a pair of road victories against Algoma and Laurentian. The U of Toronto women's team (0-5) have had their share of struggles thus far, their closest loss coming by 10 points to the Western Mustangs. In last season's match-up, the Thunderwolves gave up a 63-53 loss to the Blues in Toronto. The Blues are led by Jill Stratton, who averages 9.2 points per game.

The Ryerson Rams (2-4) were on the receiving end of a 63-53 loss by the Thunderwolves one season ago. Kelsey Bardsley scored 15 points in that victory, and has led the 'Wolves offensively in their two previous games. Keneca Pingue-Giles has led the Rams this season with 11.5 points and 7.2 rebounds per game.

Coach Jon Kreiner:

"These are two huge games when you look at the standings in the OUA West. Toronto and Ryerson are two dangerous teams that have size and athleticism. We will need to be ready to rebound and play post defense."

Thunderwolf Men (1-5)

Despite their struggles of late, it's worth noting that the 'Wolves record at this point of the season last year is identical to what it stands at today. Working a slew of new players into the Lakehead system continues with mixed results. The Varsity Blues (2-3) are also a program in transition with the arrival of new head coach John Campbell. Leading the Blues is 5th year senior Alex Hill, scoring 27.6 points and grabbing 6.8 rebounds per game.

The team from Ryerson has had the 'Wolves number of late, winning the past two meetings. The 1-2 punch of guards Aaron Best and Jahmal Jones (11.5 and 17.7 PPG, respectively) should provide a challenge to Lakehead's backcourt. It's worth noting that the Rams are the 5th best rebounding team in the country.

Coach Matt Erdman:

"Regardless of the outcomes so far, we need to continue to stay positive, become closer as a group and build. This weekend brings in two quality opponents and gives us another opportunity to get better as a group. The focus for the weekend is sticking to the game plan keeping in mind it's a process."
